6/21/2022 (Permalink)
Do you often find that your basement is always wet after what might just seem a small storm? Are you having to deal with the continuous drying of your basement during snow season? You are not alone. The majority of homeowners have the same issues with excess water or moisture intruding into their basements during very poor weather situations and are looking for all sorts of solutions to their problem.
SERVPRO of St Clair County technicians understand that a wet basement can cause all sorts of problems. As a finished living space, any moisture intruding into your basement can ruin carpet, drywall, insulation and framing.
Water getting into a cellar you use for your storage can warp flooring one level above and encourage the spread of mold to other areas of your home.
Inclement weather conditions that occur such as rainfall and melting snow have the ability to produce thousands of gallons of water and can cause all sorts of major problems you simply aren't ready to handle.
Maintaining clean gutters and making sure that you provide the proper soil slopes in your landscaping can channel excess water away from your home. Correct R-rated attic insulation can help prevent ice damming on the roof and gutters leading to more harm.
Call SERVPRO of St Clair County at 205-525-0332 with any questions or concerns you may have.

It's easy for the cleaning of air ducts and HVAC systems on your property to go forgotten, but it is important to keep up with regular HVAC maintenance. Like anything else in a home or business, air ducts accumulate dust and dirt over time. Other the factors that may increase the need for regular HVAC system cleaning are pets, occupants with allergies or asthma, cigarette or cigar smoke, water contamination or damage to the home HVAC system, or home renovation and remodeling projects. The National Air Duct Cleaning Association (NADCA) recommends that dirty HVAC systems be inspected by a reputable, certified HVAC professional. Clean HVAC systems can result in an improved air quality of your home or business. Regular cleaning may also increase your energy savings and give your HVAC system a longer lifespan.

Sprinkler Maintenance For Fires
8/9/2021 (Permalink)
Fire sprinkler maintenance is an easy thing to forget when most businesses will never experience a fire. Fire sprinklers on your commercial property need to be checked regularly in order to prevent a disaster. When sprinklers fail to turn on, the fire damage can be devastating. Follow these simple steps to ensure your sprinklers work well.
1. Make Sure the Water Is Turned On
It may seem obvious, but missing this step can be devastating. Confirm the water valves leading to your sprinklers are turned on. This step needs to be performed after all maintenance jobs involving water valves.
2. Do Not Paint Over the Sprinklers
Perhaps it is tempting to paint over fire sprinklers to help them blend into the decor. However, it is important to remember they are functional, not decorative. Paint can block water flow, thus preventing them from fulfilling their purpose.
3. Do Not Block the Sprinklers
Make sure you do not block sprinklers, especially when utilizing precious storage space. Sprinklers cannot do their job well if they are obstructed.
4. Check for Corrosion or Build-up
This sprinkler maintenance step is similar to not painting over the sprinkler system. Make sure to periodically check for corrosion or buildup so the sprinklers can work optimally.
5. Make Sure the Sprinkler Pipes Don’t Freeze
Saving money by turning the heat down in an empty building may seem like a practical choice. The problem is that wet pipes can freeze in cold temperatures, preventing the sprinklers from functioning properly. Keep your building warm enough to prevent freezing pipes.
6. Do Not Hang Things From Sprinklers
While it is tempting to hang items from sprinklers, remember that sprinklers are not meant to hold any kind of weight. Hanging things from sprinklers can cause them to bend or break, and a broken sprinkler is no help if there is a fire.
Keeping up with your fire sprinkler maintenance is just as important as fire prevention. Even with proper maintenance, accidents can still happen. When they do, your emergency restoration services partner can help get you back to work again. Call SERVPRO of St Clair County at 205-525-0332 and let us help you today!

What's in your ducts?
7/15/2019 (Permalink)
Did you know, your ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality? Inspecting the ductwork in your facility or home should be a high priority. In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention. Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold, and irritating dust throughout your building or home.
A routine part of SERVPRO of St Clair County's professional services is inspecting the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC). Keeping the HVAC and ductwork clean can potentially extend the life span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which may help save you money. Duct cleaning may not always be necessary. SERVPRO of St Clair County professionals will inspect your HVAC system and ductwork and make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. This inspection can help save you money and provide peace of mind on the health of your HVAC system and ductwork.
In some circumstances, such as after fire, smoke or suspected mold growth, duct cleaning becomes an essential part of the cleanup process. In these cases, SERVPRO of St Clair County professionals can often restore the HVAC system and ductwork to pre-damage condition.
If you have a fuel burning furnace, stove or fireplace, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends they be inspected for proper functioning, and be serviced before each heating season to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning.
The SERVPRO Duct Cleaning System is proven and cost efficient. Unlike the majority of duct cleaning services, SERVPRO of St Clair County professionals use a portable ventilation and air duct cleaning system to examine ductwork and make a clean sweep, removing years of dust and grime.
The process begins by using patented equipment including a roto-scraper, which automatically adapts to the duct’s shape and diameter while traveling through the duct, removing debris and filth before vacuuming begins.
Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from the ducting to a 16-gallon container.
Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97 percent of the particles in the airstream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the indoor environment clean.
As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns.
Filters will either be cleaned or replaced to remove odor and dirt.

Water getting into a cellar you use for storage can warp flooring one level above and encourage the spread of mold to other areas of your home.
Inclement weather events such as rainfall and melting snow have the ability to produce thousands of gallons of water and can cause major problems you simply aren't ready to handle.
Maintaining clean gutters and making sure that you provide the proper soil slopes in your landscaping can channel excess water away from your home. Correct R-rated attic insulation can help prevent ice damming on the roof and gutters leading to more harm.

Commercial Work
6/22/2017 (Permalink)
Boxes upon boxes upon boxes. We never know how many boxes to expect when we have commercial jobs. But before we know it, we will have a warehouse full of them. After all, when our customer has a water or fire event in his/her business, before we can start the clean up, we have to get everything else out of the way. This could mean moving couches or desks or even bookshelves full of collectibles; either way, smaller items have to be boxed up and stored away safely by our packing experts. If items have to be cleaned due to damage done to them in a water or fire event, commercial customer contents will have to be boxed initially on site, brought back to our warehouse, unboxed in order to be cleaned, and then boxed again once they have been detailed. Most days our warehouse is completely full of these boxes. Sometimes they stay stored in our warehouse for weeks and months if construction is necessary at the site of the damage after we do the initial mitigation work. We are grateful to help our customers in many ways. So let us do the heavy lifting and the packing for you. It's what we do!

Spring Cleaning All Year Round
5/11/2017 (Permalink)
Spring has come and gone but if anyone is like me they like to do spring cleaning even when it is not spring and we want you to keep your commercial business in good condition all year long! We want you to prevent mold, water leaks, and even fires!
In the meantime, here are some helpful tips about Spring-Cleaning for your OFFICE:
-Divide your workspace into zones: Determine how you want and need to use the space and set up zones for your daily functions. You may require a workspace for your computer, a library area for your research, a storage area for supplies and a filing area for your archives. This will provide a foundation for a more efficient use of space.
-Keep only what you need at arm's length: Boxes of pens, stacks of papers and old coffee cups need to go. Rid your desk of visual clutter by paring down the items on top to the essentials only. Supplies, paperwork and personal items should be kept in the zones you've establishes for them.
-Create a daily paper system: Consider creating hanging files or baskets labeled "to read," "to do," and "to file." Establish set days for each, so that you don't get behind or feel the overwhelming need to do everything at once.
-Sort your catch-all drawer: Use drawer dividers to give everything a place, like compartments for paperclips and rubber bands. Go through the drawer every six weeks and clear out anything that is out of place or isn't being used.
-Eliminate digital clutter: Digital clutter can be just as stressful as physical clutter. Organize digital files and your email inbox just as you would paper files- with a system of logical and clearly labeled folders. Also, keep the icons on your desktop to a bare minimum, and trade in sticky notes on your monitor for calendar reminders.
-Disinfect regularly: Prevent the buildup of dust, dirt, food stains and fingerprints. Wipe down your desk, phone, keyboard and monitor once a week with disinfecting wipes.
